It’s a nationwide crisis — foreclosure rates are at record high levels, with an estimated 2,000,000 Americans at risk of losing their homes.
Here in Austin, the mortgage mess means many are being forced to give up a beloved part of their life — the family pet.
Lalya Hanna at Austin’s Humane Society said they’ve definitely seen an increase in the number of pets surrendered by owners facing foreclosure.
“Over the last month or so I’ve personally talked to three different families our other intake lady Katie has talked to about three or so in the last week or so who are losing their homes,” said Hanna.
The Town Lake Animal Shelter said it had not seen a large number of people who’ve lost their homes bringing their pets here but said they are tracking that problem.
They believe it could become even bigger in the future.
